Ever struggled to find the perfect domain name for your business? Well, that should be a thing of the past when a new domain name system comes online.
In fact, could this be the end of the internet as we know it and the beginning of something new? Well, it depends on how successful it is, but it will certainly change the way we search for and find online businesses.
In mid 2013, the dot coms, dot nets, dot orgs and other “traditional” domain name extensions will have to make room for a new breed of more descriptive domain name extensions such as .music, .family, .shop, .bar and around 1,000 others, with many more to come after that. These domain name extensions are known as TLDs or Top Level Domains and are likely to change the way we think about the internet foreever, and particularly how we search for services.
The introduction of new TLDs will change how the world uses the Web by allowing a more customised and memorable naming convention. Thos who get in first are likely to receive a considerable increase in website traffic. For example, how about a user living in Auckland who wants to find a flower shop close by? Simply type in flowers.auckland ! Or what if you live in Richmond and need a local plumber? How about typing in richmond.plumber ? The possibilities are endless.
No matter who you are, as long as you’re a PURPLE DOG customer you can very easily participate in this historic event. We will be amongst the first inline to grab the new domains for our clients.
The new domains will be released in three stages: 1) Sunrise: premium top dollar extensions via auction e.g. google.web, 2) Landrush: registrations from pre-approved vendors (this is where Purple Dog will stand in line) and 3) General Availability: e.g. anyone can register whatever domains are remaining.
We will shortly be announcing how clients can pre-register their expressions of interest for any new domain name extension(s), so watch this space. Meanwhile, if you’d like any specific information, you can contact us here.

I think this will be great, but as usual, the big boys will probably grab most of the really exciting names and if you’re not in quick, the usual cyber domain squatters will grab the others! I wish there was a way to guarantee my company name.
Thanks for the heads up though. I’ll be pre-registering for sure!

Hi Nigel – you are probably right about the big brands grabbing the big names – but anyone with the funds can bid (granted, you’d need a fair bit to compete against the likes of Google).
There’s no way to guarantee any one specific business name, as is the case right now – it’s pretty much a first come, first served scenario. Get in touch directly if you’d like further info.

I am interested in finding out more about this. How will it affect my existing .coms etc? Are they going to be phased out? How much would something like educational.game cost and when are they likely to be introduced?
Sol Harris
Hi Lisa, I’ll try to answer your questions: Existing domain TLDs are not expected to change. In fact, if anything, the more popular the new extensions become over time, the more dot coms etc will become available as organisations and businesses shift their focus to more descriptive domain names. So as far as we know, nothing will be phased out – just greater choice. It is impossible to know the cost of any of these new TLDs as they will initially all be up for grabs via auction. However, in the General Release phase, there is usually a fixed cost, much like now – so we will have to wait and see what happens as they are rolled out over the next 12 months or so.
Let me know if you need further information.
